Lesson steps
1 The contact point
Set your left index fingertip just behind the first fret on string 1.
2 min
Check for · You can see a narrow gap between your fingertip and the metal wire.
More detail
A fret space lies between two wires. In the first space, aim for the wire on the body side. Left finger 1 is the index.
2 Thumb behind the neck
Rest your left thumb behind the neck, roughly opposite the middle finger.
2 min

Check for · Your fingers stay curved and your palm stays clear of the neck.
More detail
The thumb makes light contact. The guitar is already balanced on its supports.
3 Find the lightest pressure
Ease off your index finger a little between successive F notes.
3 min · Quarter note = 48, 1 note per click
Check for · You hear the first buzz and can recover a clear note with a small increase in pressure.
More detail
Pluck with the right finger shown. Your ear tells you when the pressure is too light.
4 E and F
Alternate open E and first-fret F on the thinnest string.
3 min · Quarter note = 48, 1 note per click
Check for · The pitches are distinct. Both attacks are equally loud.
More detail
At zero, release the left index. At 1, return it to the same spot near the fret wire.
You can move on when…
You pass when you find a clear F three times without squeezing harder after the attack.
If a movement feels difficult
The F buzzes.
Move your fingertip closer to the first fret wire.
I squeeze the neck between my thumb and index finger.
Find the minimum pressure again, one note at a time.
