Give the pickup the same tone as the melody that follows.

Phrase 2 · bars 2–3

Let the bass follow the melody without accenting it.

Phrase 3 · bars 4–5

Keep the pulse through the offbeat eighth notes.

Phrase 4 · bars 6–7

Keep the melody more prominent than the thumb.

Phrase 5 · bars 8–9

In bar 9, play the low D on string 5 so the chord can keep ringing.

Phrase 6 · bars 10–11

Keep the melody calm through the bass changes.

Phrase 7 · bars 12–13

In bar 12, let the middle-register G sharp ring on string 4.

Phrase 8 · bars 14–15

Keep the melody connected above the successive bass notes.

Phrase 9 · bars 16–17

In bar 16, hold the open low E through the end of the bar.

Phrase 10 · bars 18–19

Keep the treble notes gentle during the position shift.

Phrase 11 · bars 20–21

Bring out the melody even when it returns to the middle register.

Phrase 12 · bars 22–23

Keep the same pulse through the accidentals.

Phrase 13 · bars 24–25

Let the melody finish before the accompaniment starts again.

Phrase 14 · bars 26–27

Recover the opening balance between melody and bass.

Phrase 15 · bars 28–29

Keep the bass just as light as the melody descends.

Phrase 16 · bars 30–31

Play the two short slurred pairs without plucking the second notes.

Phrase 17 · bars 32–33

Let the final chord ring through the last bass notes.
