Level 3/5 in our learning path28 written barsPractice reference: 60 bpmSuggested work: 10–20 minutes per passage

The repeated notes train p-a-m-i. Between them, the thumb plays a line that needs to sing. Arpeggios and slurs vary the pattern. The app uses 60 as a practice tempo; the engraving says Allegro.

  • Preparing for tremolo
  • Arpeggios
  • Sustained bass notes
  • Pull-offs

Before learning the piece

  • App checkpoint: play p-a-m-i for 20 seconds with four even attacks per click. Practise this skill.
  • App checkpoint: play five pull-offs from fret 1 to open on string 1, without plucking again with the right hand. Practise this skill.
  • App checkpoint: bring out four bass notes in a row above softer repeated notes. Practise this skill.

These checkpoints belong to our learning path. They do not set a deadline for your progress.

Tablature and fingerings

The six lines represent the strings, with high E at the top. Numbers show frets; 0 means an open string. The letters p, i, m and a indicate right-hand fingers.

Your phrase-by-phrase plan

Work on a short passage. Aim for five clean attempts in a row, then connect two phrases. Bar numbers follow our transcription, including a separately numbered pickup where applicable.

Phrase 1 · bars 1–2

In bar 1, play p-a-m-i: the thumb plays the bass, then three fingers repeat the same note. In bar 2, switch to p-i-m-i. Let each bass last until the next click.

Phrase 2 · bars 3–4

Compare the bass notes on string 4 in bar 3: open, 1, 2, then 3. In bar 4, listen to the contrast between fret 2 on string 4 and open string 6.

Phrase 3 · bars 5–6

These two bars repeat the opening. Keep the same movements and pace. Check that the three repeated notes do not overpower the bass melody.

Phrase 4 · bars 7–8

In bar 7, prepare the final ascent across three strings. In bar 8, do not pluck the open first string again after the short slur. Observe the rest on the last beat.

Phrase 5 · bars 9–10

The repeat starts at bar 9. The repeated note moves to fret 1 on string 2. In bar 10, check the four chord shapes before joining them together.

Phrase 6 · bars 11–12

In bar 11, the treble melody descends on string 1: 3, 3, 2, then 1. In bar 12, open string 3 returns between the melody notes.

Phrase 7 · bars 13–14

In bars 13 and 14, change the repeated note's position only on each click. Keep the three attacks that follow equally spaced.

Phrase 8 · bars 15–16

In bar 15, let the thumb guide the changes. Work separately on the three slurs in bar 16: each fretted note pulls off to the open first string.

Phrase 9 · bars 17–18

In bar 17, hold the low bass for the first two beats. From beat three, bring out the descent under the open first string. In bar 18, return to the slurs from 16.

Phrase 10 · bars 19–20

In bar 19, return to the descent from 17. In bar 20, play the eight bass notes alone. Add the open first string without shortening those bass notes.

Phrase 11 · bars 21–22

Return to the opening two bars. Compare your tone and pace with the start of your run. Keep the returning pattern even.

Phrase 12 · bars 23–24

In bar 23, the bass at fret 5 on string 5 leaves string 4 free. Prepare the small barre at 3. In bar 24, check the bass at fret 4 on string 5 before the change.

Phrase 13 · bars 25–26

In bar 25, listen to the first two shapes at fret 4, then the open first string. In bar 26, prepare to return to positions 1 to 3.

Phrase 14 · bars 27–28

In bars 27–28, return to the ending of 7–8. Keep the final rest. On the first pass, return to 9; on the second, finish here.
