Tárrega — Preludio in G major (No. 3): guitar tab and practice guide

Level 4/5 in our learning path33 written barsPractice reference: 72 bpmSuggested work: 10–20 minutes per passage

An Allegretto in G major, with thirty-two full bars preceded by an eighth-note pickup. The app counts this pickup as bar 1. Work on shifts without interrupting the melody. The barre at V in bar 3 is brief, then the hand moves up towards positions IX–X. In bar 5, the held B and D are shortened precisely at their reattack on the same string. The tempo of 72 quarter notes per minute is an added practice reference.

Skills to prepare

  • Independent voices
  • Barres and position shifts
  • Slides and slurs

Before learning the piece

  • App checkpoint: keep an upper note present through three softer inner notes, for five attempts. Practise this skill.
  • App checkpoint: move between two barre shapes five times, releasing pressure during the shift. Practise this skill.
  • App checkpoint: play five descending slurs without replucking their arrival notes. Practise this skill.

These checkpoints belong to our learning path. They do not set a deadline for your progress.

Tablature and fingerings

The six lines represent the strings, with high E at the top. Numbers show frets; 0 means an open string. The letters p, i, m and a indicate right-hand fingers.

Lighten your pressure during the successive shifts into the upper register.
