A barre needs a clear contact on the strings used by the chord. It does not automatically require the whole hand to squeeze harder. Begin by identifying which strings must sound and which belong to notes placed by other fingers. Test the required notes separately so you can hear exactly where the contact needs attention.
Try a small adjustment in the index finger’s position near the fret, then compare the same note with a similar right-hand attack. Add the other fingers gradually and check again. A finger that helps one note may touch a neighbouring string that needs to remain free, so listen to the complete shape before repeating it.
Release between attempts rather than holding the pressure while thinking about the next step. Then practise arriving from the preceding note. A barre that works when placed slowly still needs a coordinated entrance and an appropriate release inside the phrase.
Return to a short musical passage and keep the melody clearly above the accompaniment. If a held note disappears during a change, isolate that transition. The goal is a stable shape that supports the musical line with appropriate effort, not a test of how long you can keep a chord pressed down.
What this exercise helps you change
- Buzzing barre
- Muted strings
- Thumb squeezing too hard
Your practice steps
1. Prepare a small barre
Place your index finger across the strings the passage needs, close to the fret. Start with a partial barre.
A partial barre covers just a few strings; a full barre covers all six. Choose an actual barre from a passage in your tab.
Your checkpoint: The required strings are covered without muting the others.

2. Check string by string
Play each string of the barre separately. Adjust your index finger on the buzzing string before squeezing harder.
Your checkpoint: Each required string sounds clearly.

3. Reduce the pressure
Release gradually, then restore just enough pressure for a clear tone. Keep your thumb relaxed.
Your checkpoint: The sound stays clear with less effort.

4. Release between attempts
Release pressure between attempts. Set the barre again only when your hand is relaxed.
The guide's goal is two minutes of practice with releases, never two minutes of continuous squeezing. The short routine allows one minute; the long routine allows two.
Your checkpoint: You alternate useful pressure with release.

5. Put it back in the phrase
Play the barre with the preceding bar. Prepare its position before it arrives.
Your checkpoint: The connection stays clear without squeezing in advance.

Common difficulties and corrections
One string under the barre buzzes.
Check each string separately and move your index finger a little closer to the fret.
Return to step 2You keep squeezing harder.
Release, then use only the pressure needed to sound the note.
Return to step 3You barre more strings than necessary.
Return to the partial barre the passage needs.
Return to step 1The barre arrives too late.
Practise the link from the previous bar and prepare the placement.
